Pearl Harbor Accessibility Guide: Wheelchairs, Mobility & Seniors

Pearl Harbor is a must-see for visitors of every age, including veterans, seniors and travelers with limited mobility. The good news is that the main memorial site is largely accessible. Here’s what to know before you go.

Is Pearl Harbor wheelchair accessible?

Yes, for the most part. At Pearl Harbor National Memorial, the visitor center, exhibit galleries, theater, bookstore, restrooms and drinking fountains are all wheelchair accessible, and the Navy vessels that carry visitors out to the USS Arizona Memorial, as well as the memorial itself, are accessible too. Accessible parking is located in the front lot, and benches are placed throughout the grounds.

Bring your own wheelchair or scooter

The National Park Service notes that wheelchairs are not available for general loan and are provided only in emergencies. If you or someone in your group needs one, bring your own or rent one in Honolulu before your visit.

Services for hearing and vision needs

  • Captions: the theater documentary is captioned in English.
  • Induction loop: available for hearing-aid users.
  • ASL interpreters: visitors with a Recreation.gov reservation can request one by email at least 14 days before their visit; tour guests should arrange it through their tour provider.
  • Braille and tactile models: available throughout the site, plus a braille-ready park brochure.

The other historic sites

The Battleship Missouri, USS Bowfin and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum are run by separate nonprofit partners, and accessibility varies, especially aboard historic ships with steep ladders and narrow passages. Check each site’s accessibility information, and let your tour provider know about any needs in advance.

Tips for seniors and visitors with limited mobility

  • Choose a shorter itinerary. The visitor center and USS Arizona Memorial alone make a meaningful visit.
  • Go early to avoid midday heat and crowds.
  • Use the benches and shaded areas between exhibits.
  • Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Tell your tour company in advance about mobility needs so they can plan pickup and pacing.

Tours that work well

A guided tour removes the stress of parking and long walks from distant lots. The Pearl Harbor & Historic Honolulu City Tour keeps walking to a minimum and focuses on the USS Arizona Memorial and a narrated drive through historic Honolulu. Groups and families who need extra flexibility can ask about private options when booking.
